RELEASE NOTES:

  • August 24, 2011
The "Standard Fixed Assets Tables" and "Private Fixed Investment Reconciliation Tables" have been updated to incorporate the results from the 2011 annual revision of the national income and product accounts (2008-2010), the benchmarking of private fixed investment by industry and by type of asset (1998- 2010), and the incorporation of an improved methodology for converting estimates of government-owned structures classified by type to structures classified by function (1997-2010). Chain-type quantity index levels are potentially revised for the entire historical period; however, revisions to percent change in the indexes are limited to 1998-forward for private fixed assets and 1997-forward for government fixed assets. The "Standard Fixed Assets Tables" present estimates of net stocks, depreciation, fixed investment, other changes in volume of assets, and the average age of net stocks for fixed assets and consumer durable goods. Corresponding "Detailed Fixed Assets Tables" are currently unavailable, but will be posted in the near future. The "Private Fixed Investment Reconciliation Tables" present the relationship between private fixed investment in the Fixed Assets Accounts and corresponding items in the National Income and Product Accounts.

Revised and newly available (2004) detailed fixed assets tables are now available. These tables present detailed estimates of net stocks, depreciation, and investment by type and by industry for private residential and nonresidential fixed assets. The residential detailed estimates are revised for 2002 and 2003 reflecting the incorporation of the 2005 NIPA annual revision. Additionally, two series have been added to the residential detailed estimates under sole proprietors and partnerships: 1) "Owner-occupied, 1-4 units, new," and 2) "Owner-occupied, manufactured homes." Previously these two series were inadvertently excluded. The nonresidential detailed estimates for current-cost net stocks and depreciation and historical-cost investment are revised for 2002-2003 reflecting the incorporation of the 2005 NIPA annual revision. The nonresidential detailed chain-type quantity index estimates for net stocks, depreciation and investment are revised for selected series beginning with 1987. March 8, 2005
New NAICS-based estimates of investment and depreciation by industry. Fixed Asset tables for investment and for depreciation for 1987-2003 are now available, reflecting the results of the 2004 annual revision to the national income and product accounts and the conversion of private fixed assets by industry from a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) basis to a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) basis.

Revised NAICS-based estimates of net stocks that replace the estimates that were released in the fall of 2004. Estimates of net stocks for 1987-2003 were revised to incorporate the latest investment estimates, which reflect more recent data than those used to calculate the estimates of net stocks presented in “Fixed Assets and Consumer Durable Goods for 1993-2003” in the September 2004 Survey of Current Business. These latest investment estimates have been reconciled to the latest NIPA estimates of investment by type of asset; the estimates also reflect some corrections to the investment by industry series.
