Gross Domestic Product by Industry for 1998-2000

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) today released new estimates of Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) by Industry for 2000 and revised estimates for 1998-99. The estimates incorporate
the results of this year's annual revision of the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA's) and
newly available source data.

The new and revised data show that real GDP growth in private industries, which generate 88
percent of current-dollar GDP, slowed to 4.1 percent in 2000 from 4.8 percent in 1999. At 4.1
percent, growth in 2000 remained healthy nonetheless, with strong growth in industries related to
information technology playing an important role.

Among the fastest growing industry groups in 2000 were communications which grew 10.7
percent and durable-goods manufacturing, which grew 7.1 percent. The overall growth in durable
goods reflected double-digit growth rates in IT-related manufacturing industries. Strong growth in
these industries and other services-producing industries more than offset slow growth in government,
zero growth in nondurable-goods manufacturing, and declines in mining (see tables 1 and 2, below).

The GDP-by-Industry estimates are value-added measures that are based on the NIPA
components of Gross Domestic Income. They are used to measure the contribution of each private
industry and of government to the Nation's GDP. BEA prepares estimates of GDP by Industry for
62 private industries and for 4 government classifications including Federal general government,
Federal government enterprises, State and local general government, and State and local
government enterprises.

The GDP-by-Industry Accounts provide annual estimates. They include estimates of current-
dollar and real GDP by Industry, gross output by industry, and intermediate inputs by industry. In
addition, they include estimates of prices, unit costs, and contributions by industry. More
information about the GDP-by-Industry Accounts can be found in the November 2001 issue of the
Survey of Current Business, BEA's monthly journal. Information on how to obtain the Survey of
Current Business is provided below.
