Research on Factoryless Goods Producers

Recent versions of the North American Industry Classification System, the System of National Accounts, and the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual introduce changes to capture trends in globally fragmented production arrangements. The changes were introduced to yield more accurate and more relevant economic statistics, and the changes would affect economic statistics on factoryless goods producers (FGPs) and manufacturing service providers (MSPs). Research related to the operations and characteristics of FGPs and MSPs is currently being undertaken by BEA and other U.S. statistical agencies. In addition, international forums have been established through the United Nations and other international organizations to share experiences and ideas for solutions to conceptual challenges and practical challenges related to measuring production under globally fragmented arrangements. This page contains research materials and other information drafted by BEA to help users and other interested parties stay informed about BEA’s ongoing work.
