FOR WIRE TRANSMISSION: 10:00 A.M. EDT, THURSDAY, August 8, 1996 Contact: Robert Yuskavage (202) 606-9762 BEA 96-26 GROSS PRODUCT BY INDUSTRY, 1977-94 1994 PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES 1977-93 REVISED ESTIMATES Wholesale trade, "agriculture, forestry, and fishing," and services were the major industry groups with the fastest growth in gross product -- each industry's contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) -- between 1977 and 1994, according to the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis. (Industry gross product, often referred to as "value added," is the industry's gross output minus its intermediate inputs.) Real gross product in wholesale trade increased at an average annual rate of 4.9 percent for the 1977-94 period, nearly double the 2.6-percent increase in GDP. In "agriculture, forestry, and fishing," real gross product increased 3.9 percent, and in services, it increased 3.4 percent. Other major industry groups whose growth in real gross product exceeded that of GDP were "transportation and public utilities" (3.1 percent), retail trade (2.9 percent), and "finance, insurance, and real estate" (2.8 percent). The slowest growth among the major industry groups during the 1977-94 period was in mining, 0.9 percent; construction, 1.0 percent; and government, 1.2 percent. Manufacturing's growth in gross product, 2.3 percent, was also below the growth of GDP. Revisions to the growth rates for GDP and for major industry groups were small. The average annual rate of increase for GDP from 1977 to 1993 was revised to 2.5 percent from the previously published 2.6 percent. The major industry groups with the largest revisions were "agriculture, forestry, and fishing," from 3.0 percent to 3.4 percent; "transportation and public utilities," from 3.1 percent to 2.9 percent; and retail trade, from 3.0 percent to 2.8 percent. Shares of GDP The private services-producing industries' share of current-dollar GDP increased from 51.9 percent in 1977 to 62.0 percent in 1994; these industries consist of "transportation and public utilities," wholesale trade, retail trade, "finance, insurance, and real estate," and services. Of these industry groups, the services industry's share of GDP increased the most, from 12.6 percent in 1977 to 19.4 percent in 1994. The "finance, insurance, and real estate" industry's share increased from 14.0 percent to 18.4 percent. The private goods-producing industries' share of GDP decreased from 32.8 percent in 1977 to 24.2 percent in 1994; these industries consist of "agriculture, forestry, and fishing," mining, construction, and manufacturing. Of these industry groups, the manufacturing industry's share of GDP fell the most, from 22.8 percent in 1977 to 17.3 percent in 1994. The government's share of GDP decreased from 14.5 percent in 1977 to 13.4 percent in 1994. New Features The estimates of gross product by industry in this release incorporate the results of the comprehensive revision to the national income and product accounts released in January, including the use of a chain-type measure of real output and the improved treatment of government investment. The revised gross product estimates also reflect the incorporation of several other statistical and presentational improvements. Current-dollar estimates have been revised back to 1959, and real estimates have been revised back to 1977. Additional details on gross product by industry will appear in the August issue of the Survey of Current Business, the monthly journal of the Bureau of Economic Analysis. * * * BEA estimates are available in several forms besides the printed news releases.
