- BEA’s benchmark I-O tables are considered one of the major sources of new data for the accounts. They provide benchmark estimates for several major product-side components of GDP, including personal consumption expenditures, investment in structures, private fixed investment in equipment and intellectual property products, and type-of-product detail for state and local government consumption expenditures and gross investment. They are also used in estimating parts of several income components.
- In comprehensive updates, other data sources that are not available annually are also incorporated. These include the quinquennial economic, agriculture, and government censuses, and certain data from the decennial population and housing censuses.
- BEA also incorporates the source data for the most recent 5 years that would normally be incorporated in the annual update. In other words, the benchmark encompasses the normal annual NIPA update.
