PERSONAL INCOME AND OUTLAYS: JUNE 2004
REVISED ESTIMATES: 2001 THROUGH MAY 2004
Personal income increased $23.0 billion, or 0.2 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI)
increased $21.4 billion, or 0.2 percent, in June, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) decreased $53.3 billion, or 0.7 percent. In May, personal
income increased $54.0 billion, or 0.6 percent, DPI increased $46.9 billion, or 0.5 percent, and PCE
increased $84.5 billion, or 1.0 percent, based on revised estimates.

The estimates released today reflect revisions in the national income and product accounts
beginning with January 2001. Revisions are usually made each July to incorporate source data that
are more complete, more detailed, and otherwise more consistent than previously available. This
release includes revised monthly personal income, disposable personal income, and outlays and
provides an overview of the effects of the revision. The August 2004 Survey of Current Business will
contain national income and product accounts tables and an article describing the revisions. The
revised estimates will be available from BEA's Web site at <www.bea.gov>.
Wages and salaries
Private wage and salary disbursements decreased $2.7 billion in June, in contrast to an increase
of $35.0 billion in May. Goods-producing industries' payrolls increased $0.5 billion, compared with
an increase of $7.6 billion; manufacturing payrolls were unchanged in June; manufacturing payrolls
increased $5.1 billion in May. Services-producing industries' payrolls decreased $3.2 billion in
June, in contrast to an increase of $27.3 billion in May. Government wage and salary disbursements
increased $1.4 billion, in contrast to a decrease of $3.3 billion.
Other personal income
Proprietors' income increased $7.8 billion in June, compared with an increase of $8.3 billion in
May. Farm proprietors' income increased $0.2 billion, compared with an increase of $0.5 billion.
Nonfarm proprietors' income increased $7.6 billion, compared with an increase of $7.9 billion.
Rental income of persons increased $0.8 billion in June, compared with an increase of $1.4
billion in May. Personal income receipts on assets (personal interest income plus personal dividend
income) increased $6.9 billion, compared with an increase of $6.7 billion. Personal current transfer
receipts increased $3.4 billion, compared with an increase of $3.9 billion.
Contributions for government social insurance -- a subtraction in calculating personal income --
decreased $0.1 billion in June, in contrast to an increase of $5.1 billion in May.
Personal current taxes and disposable personal income
Personal current taxes increased $1.5 billion in June, compared with an increase of $7.2 billion
in May. Disposable personal income (DPI) -- personal income less personal current taxes --
increased $21.4 billion, or 0.2 percent, in June, compared with an increase of $46.9 billion, or 0.5
percent, in May.
Personal outlays and personal saving
Personal outlays -- PCE, personal interest payments, and personal current transfer payments
decreased $49.9 billion in June, in contrast to an increase of $88.0 billion in May. PCE decreased
$53.3 billion, in contrast to an increase of $84.5 billion.
Personal saving -- DPI less personal outlays -- was $175.8 billion in June, compared with
$104.5 billion in May. Personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income was 2.0
percent in June, compared with 1.2 percent in May.
Real DPI and real PCE
Real DPI -- DPI adjusted to remove price changes -- increased less than 0.1 percent in June,
compared with an increase of 0.1 percent in May.
Real PCE -- PCE adjusted to remove price changes -- decreased 0.9 percent in June, in contrast
to an increase of 0.6 percent in May. Purchases of durable goods decreased 5.8 percent, in contrast
to an increase of 3.7 percent. Purchases of motor vehicles and parts accounted for most of the June
decrease and accounted for most of the May increase. Purchases of nondurable goods decreased 0.7
percent in June, in contrast to an increase of 0.3 percent in May. Purchases of services increased less
than 0.1 percent, compared with an increase of 0.2 percent.
Revision of the Personal Income and Outlays Estimates
Personal income, personal outlays, DPI, and personal saving are revised beginning with
January 2001 to reflect the results of the annual revision in the national income and product accounts
(NIPAs) released last week. The NIPAs usually are revised each July to incorporate newly available
and more comprehensive source data, as well as improved estimating methodologies.
Annual revisions to the estimates of personal income and outlays, which begin with 2001, are
shown in table 12. Revised and previously published monthly estimates of personal income, DPI,
PCE, personal saving as a percentage of DPI, real DPI, and real PCE are shown in table 13; revised
and previously published annual and quarterly estimates are shown in table 14.
Personal income was revised up $11.0 billion for 2001, was revised down $31.4 billion for
2002, and was revised down $46.2 billion for 2003. For both 2002 and 2003, downward revisions to
personal interest income, to personal dividend income, to personal current transfer receipts, to
nonfarm proprietors' income, and to rental income of persons more than offset upward revisions to
supplements to wages and salaries.
Personal current taxes was revised down $6.4 billion for 2001, was revised down $1.9 billion
for 2002, and was revised up $10.5 billion for 2003. DPI was revised up $17.4 billion for 2001, was
revised down $29.5 billion for 2002, and was revised down $56.6 billion for 2003. The percent
change from the preceding year in real DPI was revised up from 1.8 percent to 1.9 percent for 2001,
was revised down from 3.8 percent to 3.1 percent for 2002, and was revised down from 2.7 percent
to 2.3 percent for 2003.
Personal outlays was revised up $12.3 billion for 2001, was revised down $5.5 billion for 2002,
and was revised up $6.3 billion for 2003. Revisions to PCE accounted for most of the 2001 revision
and more than accounted for the 2002 revision. The 2003 revision was accounted for by revisions to
PCE and to personal current transfer payments.
Personal saving as a percentage of DPI was revised up from 1.7 percent to 1.8 percent for 2001,
was revised down from 2.3 percent to 2.0 percent for 2002, and was revised down from 2.1 percent
to 1.4 percent for 2003.
