BEA’s release of the annual update of gross domestic product and related statistics, including GDP by industry, begins Sept. 25. Updates of state and county statistics start Sept. 26.

Regular annual updates, typically reaching back five years, enable the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis to refine our estimates as more complete source data become available, such as federal budget data, farm income and production statistics, Census Bureau survey data, and BEA’s own International Transactions Accounts.

Annual updates are also a time to bring in improvements in methodology and presentation. This year, to better capture the rapidly changing economy, we’ll introduce data on business investment in data centers. Recent years brought a sharp increase in construction of data centers that house infrastructure for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other networking and data storage needs. Data centers will be broken out into their own category within tables showing detailed private fixed investment in nonresidential structures.

In addition to business investment, other statistics such as consumer spending, personal income, GDP by industry, and gross domestic income will be included in our Sept. 25 annual update. The update covers the first quarter of 2020 through the first quarter of 2025.

On Sept. 26, BEA will update statistics for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to the annual update, the day also will mark the first time we issue new estimates of state GDP, personal income, and personal consumption expenditures together in the same news release, providing a more comprehensive and timelier look at state economies.

The yearly updates of statistics allow BEA to meet the needs of businesses, policymakers, and the public for early economic estimates while continuing to sharpen the picture of the economy over time. More-extensive comprehensive updates take place approximately every five years, most recently in 2023.

For more about the 2025 annual update, refer to Information on 2025 Annual Updates to the National, Industry, and State and Local Economic Accounts.

The annual update comes as BEA is amid an ongoing process of streamlining and modernizing data tables and their presentation. As of Sept. 25, some older national data tables based on outdated systems of classification will no longer be updated. Additionally, some underlying detail tables will be discontinued. No changes are planned to the presentation of tables published within the U.S. GDP news release on Sept. 25 or the U.S. Personal Income and Outlays release on Sept. 26.
