Estimates of U.S. residents’ expenditures while traveling overseas were revised to incorporate the results of a one-time survey for 1998. The results of the survey, which was completed by U.S. residents after they returned from abroad, were compared with the results of the International Trade Administration’s in-flight survey, which BEA used to estimate U.S. travelers’ expenditures and which was completed by travelers when they departed. BEA used the data from the one-time survey to develop adjustment factors that could be applied to the in-flight survey data.
