Gross domestic product (GDP) by industry and GDP by state for the second quarter of 2023 will be released Dec. 5, along with the comprehensive updates of industry and state quarterly GDP data from the first quarter of 2018 through the first quarter of 2023.
The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis will issue the GDP by industry news release at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time and the GDP by state news release at 10 a.m.
These quarterly statistics follow the Sept. 28 and 29 releases of updated annual industry and state GDP statistics for 2017-2022. The schedule reflects BEA’s first-ever synchronization of its comprehensive updates of national, industry, and state statistics.
The culmination of a yearslong effort, the harmonization of the 2023 comprehensive, or benchmark, updates allows data users to move between consistent data sets. Comprehensive updates occur roughly every five years and incorporate new and revised source data, methodological improvements, and other changes. As is typical for comprehensive updates, revised statistics continue to be issued on a rolling basis.
Most recently, on Nov. 20, BEA released the Industry Underlying Detail Tables, Annual, 2017–2022. These tables provide 138-industry level of detail for value added, gross output, and intermediate inputs.
For information on the timing and results of the comprehensive updates, refer to Information on 2023 Comprehensive Updates to the National, Industry, and State Economic Accounts and Improved Estimates of the National Economic Accounts in the Survey of Current Business.
For the third quarter, the release of GDP by industry remains on schedule with the third estimate of U.S. GDP on Dec. 21. GDP by state for the third quarter, along with state personal income, follows on Dec.22.
