The main research objective of the Regional Economic Directorate is identifying new source data and improving existing methods for producing timely, relevant, and accurate statistics for state, county, and metropolitan areas. Researchers also work to expand BEA’s suite of regional statistics, which includes gross domestic product, personal income, personal consumption expenditures, regional input-output multipliers, satellite accounts, and regional price parities.

Research economists in the Regional Directorate work with staff across BEA and collaborate with economists in other agencies and academic institutions. They present papers at national, international, and regional conferences. Some of their research is published on BEA’s website and in the Survey of Current Business.
