Gross Domestic Product for Puerto Rico, 2021

Real gross domestic product (GDP) for Puerto Rico increased 4.0 percent in 2021 after decreasing 6.2 percent in 2020, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The increase in real GDP in 2021 primarily reflected an increase in personal consumption expenditures. Private fixed investment also increased. These increases were partly offset by decreases in exports, private inventory investment, and government spending. Imports, which is a subtraction item in the calculation of GDP, increased.

Producto interior bruto para Puerto Rico, 2021

El producto interior bruto real (PIB) para Puerto Rico creció 4.0 por ciento en 2021, luego de decrecer 6.2 por ciento en 2020, de acuerdo con las estadísticas difundidas hoy por el Negociado de Análisis Económico de EE. UU.

El crecimiento en el PIB real en 2021 reflejó principalmente un crecimiento en los gastos de consumo personal. La inversión bruta en capital fijo también creció. Estos crecimientos se contrarrestaron parcialmente con los decrecimientos en las exportaciones, en la inversión privada en inventarios, y en el gasto de gobierno. Las importaciones, que son un elemento de resta en el cálculo del PIB, aumentaron.

American Samoa GDP Decreases in 2019

The estimates of gross domestic product for American Samoa show that real GDP—GDP adjusted to remove price changes—decreased 1.4 percent in 2019.

Coming Monday: Prototype GDP Statistics for Puerto Rico

BEA will release – for the first time – prototype statistics showing gross domestic product and its components for Puerto Rico at 11 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, September 28.

The prototype GDP statistics in the report will cover the years 2012-2018 and will include the components of GDP: consumer spending, private fixed investment, private inventory investment, imports and exports, and government spending.

Prototype Economic Statistics for Puerto Rico Now Available

October 15, 2019

Today, the Bureau of Economic Analysis released prototype statistics for personal consumption expenditures, private fixed investment, and net exports of goods for Puerto Rico. These annual statistics cover the time period from 2012 to 2017.

The estimates released today are a major step toward the goal of producing gross domestic product (GDP) statistics for Puerto Rico that are consistent with international guidelines and that are directly comparable to data for other U.S. territories, states, the nation, and many other countries.

Guam GDP Increases in 2017

The estimates of GDP for Guam show that real GDP—GDP adjusted to remove price changes—increased 0.2 percent in 2017 after increasing 0.3 percent in 2016. For comparison, real GDP for the United States increased 2.2 percent in 2017 after increasing 1.6 percent in 2016.

Northern Mariana Islands’ GDP Increases in 2017

The estimates of GDP for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands show that real GDP—GDP adjusted to remove price changes—increased 25.1 percent in 2017, after increasing 28.2 percent in 2016. For comparison, real GDP for the United States (excluding the territories) increased 2.2 percent in 2017 after increasing 1.6 percent in 2016.
