U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services, May 2025

The U.S. goods and services trade deficit increased in May 2025 according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau. The deficit increased from $60.3 billion in April (revised) to $71.5 billion in May, as exports decreased more than imports. The goods deficit increased $11.2 billion in May to $97.5 billion. The services surplus decreased $0.1 billion in May to $26.0 billion.

In addition, the trade in services statistics in BEA’s annual international services tables—BEA’s most detailed trade in services statistics by service type and geographic area—will be released at 10 a.m. with statistics through 2024.

The U.S. current-account deficit narrowed by $16.5 billion, or 7.6 percent, to $200.3 billion in the third quarter of 2023, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The revised second-quarter deficit was $216.8 billion. The third-quarter deficit was 2.9 percent of current-dollar gross domestic product, down from 3.2 percent in the second quarter.
