Direct Investment by Country and Industry, 2024

The U.S. direct investment abroad position, or cumulative level of investment, increased $206.3 billion to $6.83 trillion at the end of 2024, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The increase was led by an $88.4 billion increase in the position in Europe, primarily in Luxembourg and Germany. By industry, manufacturing affiliates had the largest increase, led by manufacturing of computers and electronic products. 

The foreign direct investment in the United States position increased $332.1 billion to $5.71 trillion at the end of 2024. The increase was led by a $204.7 billion increase in the position from Europe, which reflected a $52.9 billion increase from the United Kingdom and a $39.7 billion increase from Germany. By industry, affiliates in manufacturing increased the most.

| News Release

Real gross domestic product (GDP) decreased at an annual rate of 31.4 percent in the second quarter of 2020, according to the “third” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The change was 0.3 percentage point higher than the “second” estimate released in August. In the first quarter of 2020, real GDP decreased 5.0 percent.

Coming Monday: Prototype GDP Statistics for Puerto Rico

BEA will release – for the first time – prototype statistics showing gross domestic product and its components for Puerto Rico at 11 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, September 28.

The prototype GDP statistics in the report will cover the years 2012-2018 and will include the components of GDP: consumer spending, private fixed investment, private inventory investment, imports and exports, and government spending.
